The Hand Exoskeleton Haptic Display(tm), (HEHD), allows users to easily and rapidly manipulate and identify objects with a virtual hand. The HEHD provides force and tactile feedback to the human operator and will support research on the interaction of operators with objects of various shapes and surface friction characteristics. The design uses a patent pending mechanism consisting of a vertical boom, a hand exoskeleton and two miniature fingertip slip displays to provide vertical force reflection to the hand, horizontal force reflection to the thumb and index finger and a sensation of slip to the fingertips. A wide variety of applications could benefit from this technology, ranging from virtual controls for surgical simulation and cockpits, to manipulation of 3D models of molecules, CAD objects and other objects.
